Sheep Mountain Alliance (SMA) is the San Miguel County community group of the Western Colorado Congress. SMA maintains its own office and staff in Telluride.
SMA formed in 1988 in response to a proposed timber sale on scenic Lizard Head Pass to the south of Telluride. Once that threat was laid to rest, members tackled other issues tied to Telluride's burgeoning ski industry. In the mid-1990s, attempted to stop a massive land trade between the US Forest Service and notorious developer Tom Chapman. After seven years of diligence, SMA successfully influenced the nature of expansion of the Ski Area into Prospect Basin, ensuring mitigation of impacts on prime wildlife habitat. More recently, SMA organized a Rally for the Valley in response to proposals for the remaining undeveloped portions of the valley floor leading into Telluride.
